Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) Treatment

The recycling of MSW begins when they are generated, at the origin, where a correct selection minimizes the contamination of the MSW. Even with this first selection, contaminated wastes that need to be treated are still being produced and are collected in the domestic trash bag.

It is therefore necessary to carry out a selection process in the bag where organic matter remains dominating but there are still other kind of wastes due to errors or to the decreasing fraction of people who do not correctly separate their waste.

The process begins with a presentation of the waste to be treated, for which it is necessary to break the bag and break up the material using ripping cylinders and shredding mills. Once the material is ripped out, the selection process begins, which is carried out by the following systems:

  • Ferrous metals (by magnetic fields)
  • Non-ferrous metals (manual sorting and Eddy Current Separators)
  • Paper and paperboard (manual sorting)
  • Hard plastics (manual sorting)
  • Plastic film (pneumatic systems)
  • Color glass(manual sorting)
  • White glass(manual sorting)
  • Organic material. (the surplus of the previous processes)

There are also automatized sorting equipments for the plastic packages sorting (X-ray sorting)
